NORTH COAST 500 – A fantastic road trip! Day 1 – Inverness to Lochcarron

Day 1 – Inverness to Lochcarron

65 mile

Accommodation – The Wee Campsite, Lochcarron (cheap and cheerful, lovely spot, basic but perfect!) Cost for tent – £10 / hotel nearby for food and drink / good stop before Bealach Na Ba.

Left around 7:30 after a tasty breakfast with friends in Inverness. Had and quick photo at Inverness castle to mark the start of the challenge since I was cycling past anyway!
Met some lovely chaps called Bruce and Duff who had insider knowledge on where we could get coffee at a garage just off the road. Bruce was from Dingwall and he and Duff were to become two of my roadie angels that I kept running into!

Had a great ride all the way to a hotel in Achnasheen for lunch at 1230 – pricey but it was a tuna sandwich! Bumped into loads more lovely cyclists at the hotel…..and we’re all staying in Lochcarron :-).

Nothing too taxing today (although I haven’t checked elevation – around 1000 m maybe). Massive climbs tomorrow – I’ll give them a good go but suspect I may be pushing the 20% gradient bit (unless I can get my sister to take my gear up for me!)

Bike plus kit weighs about 40-50kg. Bike coping well :-)! Weather fantastic – was only 4 degrees when I set off though so was chuffed to have had cosy #pewseyvelo jersey! Thanks Nick :-). Was 18 degrees all afternoon – result! Tent wonky..but secure (what is it with me and tents???)
