NORTH COAST 500 – Day 7 – Thurso to Helmsdale

Day 7 / Thurso to Helmsdale (via Melvich – cycled back)

Stayed in Customs House, Shore Street, Helmsdale, KW8 6JZ – was terrific.

60 miles and another headwind – fancy that!

Set off back towards Melvich from Thurso since I had been told that the main road down from John O Groats was really busy and not particularly safe, and I suspected the wind would be worse on the coastal road.

The morning was clear and sunny.  When I turned left onto the cycle route at Melvich towards Helmsdale I was greeted with a most monstrous headwind!
I sat in (or close to) my granny gear all morning on a slight incline with this headwind and also really horrible evil scary crosswinds.
HOWEVER – I did eventually find a tea shop in the middle of nowhere (Forsinard, Station Cottage) with a scone and jam and the road was beautiful…it was just the wind was trying to kill me ! 25 miles to go, I neared the summit so it became a bit easier but rainy.
In other news – cuckoos were doing really well in the Highlands.

The fish and chip shop in Helmsdale is amazing (NB – the small fish supper would suffice – I ordered the classic fish supper and basically it was a double portion of everything.  I managed everything except all the chips!)

Stayed overnight in a little hotel called Customs House.  Absolutely fantastic, quiet and homely with a delicious breakfast served in the morning – Thank you Ann MacDonald

Nearly there now but still miles to go……..
